History of Library:

The Rossville Community Library was established November 9, 1950 by total volunteer labor and money.  The book collection consisted of 592 books and used magazines, all of which were donated.  The new library, located in the Community Center Building, which had been built during the summer of 1950, was under the direction of Miss Zelia French.  Mrs. Ellen Coleman was the first Librarian and Mrs. Lyda Zickefoose, the Assistant Librarian.  Mrs. Coleman received $15.00 a month in salary.  Library hours were 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and Saturday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The building was rent free, and the Rossville Township Board paid all the utilities.  Two months after the library opened, Mrs. Millicent Renwan was hired as Librarian and held that position for the next 17 years.

In January 1954 the library was reestablished as a township library and one half mill was levied.  In 1959, the library, with a book collection of 2,572 and 180 registered borrowers moved to the Bahner Building on the west side of Main Street.  The library board rented the building for $30.00 a month for the next nine years.

In 1968 federal funds were available for library construction.  A $10,000 gift by Sidney and Perry Stumbaugh was immediately matched by federal funds, and ground was broken for the present library at 407 Main Street.  Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Miller in memory of Clyde’s grandfather and uncle, Dr. Henry H. Miller and Dr. Henry B. Miller, donated the land.  Miss Mable Boyles in memory of her sister, Ethel Boyles Jackson, donated an additional $10,000 to furnish the library.  Later the Stumbaugh Brothers created a trust fund for the maintenance of the building.

Since its opening in 1950, the Library has added an addition in 1996.  The Library currently has over 14,000 items for check out.  The Rossville Community Library was established to provide the residents of Rossville and surrounding areas access to books, resources and services for education, information and recreation.
